Community Food Growing

Since 2007 there have been a small group of people involved in the Louth Community Food Gardens project. This was inspired by the Incredible Edible movement which originated in Todmorden . Originally operated under the Transition Town Louth initiative, Louth Community Food Gardens were transferred to Low Carbon Louth in 2017. There are 3 areas in the town centre that we use to grow food in public spaces, at Charles St Recreation ground, Louth Library and “The Gatherums” park near the Queen St Car Park.

These small growing spaces in public spaces perform three main functions. 1/ They are a public accessible demonstration of food growing which aims to sow a seed of interest in passers so that they might be inspired to have a go themselves. 2/ They help to reconnect people with their surroundings and encourage care for the shared green spaces in our town. 3/ They provide rewarding interactions for the volunteers that care for the gardens, both in the conversations had with passers by and the natural world that we rely on for our survival.
